The Olympic torch

The Olympic flame started in ancient Olympia, Greece. The flame is ignited by the sun, the torch burns until the closing of the games.

In Olympia there  is a curved mirror. The sun reflects on the mirror, ladies wearing  white ancient-style  robes ignite the torch  in the mirror. The torch is then passed from runner to runner as it travels from Olympia to the host city.

The most important event at the opening ceremony is the lighting of the torch. It burns for two weeks until the games have  finished.
